I was very, very religious. And of course I wrote about it in ‘Night.’ I questioned God’s silence. So I questioned. I don’t have an answer for that. Does it mean that I stopped having faith? No. I have faith, but I question it.— Elie Wiesel

It’s Showtime! – Save the Date
March 19, 6:00 p.m., Sanctuary

You can find roots of the Variety Show in vaudeville, and even before that in British music hall, and even before that during Shakespeare’s time! It is an evening of acts in a variety of styles – singing, acting, dance, poetry, magic, musicians, and so on. The pace is fast and the mood is light; the aim is to entertain! It’s not all singing, not all funny skits… You’ll be kept on your toes!

An intergenerational Variety Show at First Christian Church of Orange will also support youth and children’s ministries of the church. You might think of this event as being just for kids and parents, but we’re seeking talent of all ages to appeal to an audience of all ages.

We are the whole church together – so, let’s get together for a night of fun to share some talent! Mark your calendar.

Living the Questions 2.0 (LtQ2) | Adult Study Class
Chapter 9 – The Prophetic Jesus
Sundays 8:30 a.m. – Fireside Room

Focus for March 5: Jesus was a troublemaker. He said and did things that were upsetting to agents of the political and religious domination systems that oppressed the weak and downtrodden. In this way, Jesus stood firmly in the tradition of the prophets of Hebrew Scripture – those who offered a clear and challenging “alternative script” to the status quo.

The 32nd Annual Great American Write-In
Saturday March 18, 2017 9:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m.

Delhi Community Center
505 E Central Avenue
Santa Ana, CA 92707

This year more than ever, Women For: Orange County, a non-partisan women’s group, is pleased to present the 32nd Annual Great American Write-In. This free event is offered to the public every year to provide attendees with the means to influence policy decisions by writing letters to their legislators. It’s also a great opportunity for participants to experience first-hand what informed citizen involvement in government is all about.

More than 50 different organizations and advocacy groups will be represented with information regarding some of today’s most vital issues, including education, health care, human and civil rights and the environment. Attendees are invited to visit the various tables and then voice their opinions by writing letters to government and corporate decision-makers in the hopes of bringing about constructive change. There is no cost for this event; Women For: Orange County will supply the post cards, stationery, postage, refreshments and parking. Last year, 300 attendees generated over 2,200 letters and postcards. Plan to bring return address labels.

Green Chalice Tips

Stop Your Answering Machine
Answering machines use energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And when they break, they’re just one more thing that goes into the landfill. If all answering machines in U.S. homes were eventually replaced by voice mail services, the annual energy savings would total nearly two billion kilowatt-hours.

Skip the Coffee Stirrer
Each year, Americans throw away 138 billion straws and stirrers. But skipping the stirrer doesn’t mean drinking your coffee black. Simply put your sugar and cream in first, and then pour in the coffee, and it should be well mixed.

Determined to stir? Break off a piece of pasta from the cupboard. You can nibble after using it, compost, or throw away with less guilt.

Ash Wednesday – March 1

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent – a season that concludes with the celebration of Easter.  Lent is a time for special attention to our spiritual lives.  This year, Ash Wednesday is March 1.  We will have Drive-Through Blessings in the church parking lot from 7:00-9:00 a.m. and there will be a worship service at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel.  Both times will include the imposition of ashes.  Plan to come mark the beginning of a special spiritual journey.

Call for Delegates

The next General Assembly will be July (full in dates and location). FCCO is entitled to 5 voting delegates. Pastor’s Class Retreat
March 3-4 Friday 7:00 p.m. to Saturday 2:30 p.m., FCCO, Fireside Room

For 5th-8th graders interested in baptism and/or learning about foundations of Christian life! This is also open to those who have already been baptized and are interested in this great experience. (Even if you’re in high school, this will be cool – depending on how many people we have in different age groups, we may split into some different workshop tracks.)

Pastors Dayna and Michelle will join with pastors from other area churches and some of their young people to have an engaging and fun overnighter. We’ll explore baptism, communion, spiritual practices, developing a personalized confession of faith, the Bible, Disciples identity, and what it means to be a part of a movement for wholeness in how we live. Plus games, singing, devotions, a movie, and food.
