We thank you for all who share in prayer for our nation,

and who share in your spirit of justice and mercy.

Your kingdom come, your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

May the Empire of your Love

overthrow our human powers and dominions.

May we be faithful citizens of your Realm of Grace.

We Are One

‘I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. –John 17:20-21a, NRSV

The General Assembly is a gathering that reminds us that the Church is more than our congregation or our region. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) includes many kinds of people and many points of view, but at our best, we are essentially and intentionally ONE in our belief in Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God.

Next week, Disciples will gather as ONE for the 2017 General Assembly in Indianapolis. Thousands of Disciples gather from across the United States and Canada to demonstrate our unity in service to the Christ. We will hear inspiring messages, elect a new General Minister and President, hear about the results from Mission First! and learn together.

Prayers for Tom and Cathy Perring, Joe and Carol Quartucci, Lindsay Jacobs, Barbara Post, Shami and Priscilla Espinoza, Marcus Blazer, Michelle Harris-Gloyer, Dayna Kinkade, and the few thousand other Disciples who will gather for the General Assembly in Indianapolis July 8-12. We pray for traveling mercies, meaningful worship, insightful learning, Spirit-guided business, new connections, and a great time as One Church.

Adult Study Class will be on hiatus this Sunday July 9 while Pastor Dayna and Pastor Michelle are in Indianapolis for General Assembly. It returns on Sunday July 16.

Aloha from Katie

Stop, look and listen

Literature, painting, music — the most basic lesson that all art teaches us is to stop, look and listen to life on this planet, including our own lives, as a vastly richer, deeper, more mysterious business than most of the time it ever occurs to us to suspect as we bumble along from day to day on automatic pilot.

When Jesus [says] that the greatest command of all is to love God and to love our neighbor, he too is asking us to pay attention. If we are to love God, we must first stop, look and listen for him in what is happening around us and inside us. If we are to love our neighbors, before doing anything else we must see our neighbors. With our imagination as well as our eyes, that is to say like artists, we must see not just their faces but the life behind and within their faces. Here it is love that is the frame we see them in.

Green Chalice Ministry Tips . . .

  • Shop with the environment in mind. Each year 17 million barrels of oil are used in production of water bottles.
  • Turn off computers at night. By turning off your computer instead of leaving it in sleep mode, you can save 40 watt-hours per day.

Summertime Gathering with Disciples Women

Hankering to connect with other ladies in the church? Disciples Women are gathering for lunch on Thursday July 13 at 11:30 a.m. They are meeting at Moreno’s, 4328 E Chapman Ave, Orange. Please RSVP with Hazel Stover if you plan to attend.

Letters for Campers

Our First Christian Church of Orange campers are off to Loch Leven for summer camp continuing through the end of July.  You have an opportunity to be a part of the campers and counselors camp experience.  Remember when you were younger and you received your very own letter?  It was exciting! You can volunteer to send a letter, card or email to a camper or to one of our FCCO counselors by taking a name from the bulletin board in the courtyard on Sunday morning during the next 6 weeks.  Mail and email instructions are included with their names.  Our campers will not forget who remembered them while they were away.  This might be an opportunity for you to get to know someone new by sending an encouraging word, so select a name or two and be a part of this ministry to FCCO campers.

Equal Exchange Volunteers

Attention parents of Youth. We are in need of volunteers to staff the Equal Exchange tables on July 16 and September 17.  It is a fun way to get to know more people in the congregation while engaging in a project that assists small farmers and provides additional funds for the Youth Fund which supplements the Youth budget for both Summer Camp and Work Tour in addition to new programs.  Please either email or call the church office to sign up, orange1st@fccorange.com or 714.538.9681.  Thank you.
