Gratitude begins in our hearts and then dovetails into behavior. It almost always makes you willing to be of service, which is where the joy resides. It means that you are willing to stop being such a jerk. When you are aware of all that has been given to you, in your lifetime and the past few days, it is hard not to be humbled, and pleased to give back.

Radical Hospitality On the Move!
“The great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote, “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. / I awoke and saw that life was service. / I acted and behold, service was joy.”

What does the Bible really say about homosexuality?
by FCC Discipleship Team
We will be taking a closer look at some of the “clobber” passages of the Bible, and how they have been misused and mistranslated to cause harm to the LGBTQ community. We will be providing tools and resources to better interpret the Bible as a message of love and acceptance for all. Randy Baxter, professor at Cal State Fullerton, and Mandye Yates, minister at First Christian Church Fullerton, will be leading the conversation. Come and join us!

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support
First Christian Church of Orange hosts a monthly Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support group on the third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside room. The next meeting is Tonight September 19. We are a peer support group. Intended solely for the family and friends who are caring for someone with dementia. The meeting is not appropriate for persons with dementia to attend. We help each other with tips on how to best care for our loved ones: such as legal issues, medical issues, personal and/or behavior issues, caregiver issues, etc. The group is led by a trained volunteer facilitator, and the meeting is sanctioned by the Alzheimer’s Orange County. There is no charge to attend, and there is no pre-registration required.
Check out Pastor Dayna’s sermon “Thanks!” from Sunday September 17, 2017.

It’s the 25th anniversary of their Marine Sanctuary, designated and protected in 1992. They love it that NOAA calls these large protected ocean waters “Sanctuaries.” Obviously they know their Bible and have studied Leviticus: “You shall keep my sabbaths and revere my sanctuaries. I am the Lord.”
But this lovely bay scene, and those revered Sanctuaries, might become a thing of the past if our Department of Energy has its way: they want to do away with current regulations that outlaw offshore oil and gas drilling in these waters (and the 15 other National Marine Sanctuaries) and they want to rescind new Sanctuary protections from the past ten years. That would include the amazing Davidson Seamount in our Sanctuary, a huge underwater volcano off the Big Sur Coast that they added to protected waters in 2009. The three other California Marine Sanctuaries were also expanded in the past 10 years.
Will they still be revered?
We all have a chance to comment on these proposed changes in ocean protection. (It doesn’t matter where you live – these are “National” Marine Sanctuaries.)
-National Marine Sanctuary Foundation: has a good letter with background info that you can simply sign and your support will become part of the public comment.
-Monterey Bay Aquarium: has helpful talking points and a link to comments.
-Or you can submit your own comment directly. Personal testimonies are the most effective. In their comment, they wrote that from their personal experience as an ocean volunteer they knew that over 2 million people visit Monterey every year to see a clean safe ocean. That tourism is Monterey County’s second highest economy, after agriculture. That the California economy is thriving on alternative energy, not more fossil fuels. That as Chair of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council they had seen the wide community support and extensive process that had led to designation and expansion. And that as a person of faith they believe God calls us to be good stewards of all of creation. That they revere this Sanctuary. They hope you do too. –Courtesy of Green Chalice News August 2017
