Welcome to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Orange, California. We are a community of faithful Christians who seek every day to discover once again the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our lives and in our world. We are a progressive, Open and Affirming congregation with a vibrant spirituality and deep commitment to social justice.
We gather together as a community of faith to strengthen each other in bonds of love and fellowship. In this community of faith you can discover the hope and encouragement needed to meet the daily challenges of life. Here you can cultivate a joyous and meaningful relationship with God and Jesus Christ, and we will support you in all your efforts.
First Christian Church of Orange is a place where:
- Everyone is welcome at the table
- You can experience the grace of God with a community who enjoys serving together
- You can be a part of a church that looks beyond our own walls
Missing from this welcome are your gifts, interests, and ideas. You don’t have to plug into an existing program to engage in ministry. We are all ministers and opportunities for ministry present themselves whenever and wherever we are present. Even so, your contribution to a community of faith benefits the entire community as well as your own spiritual development. In Christian community we find support, encouragement, challenge, and growth. Our hope and prayer is that you find all of those things at First Christian Church of Orange (FCCO).
There are several things that identify us as a congregation. First, we are Disciples, meaning we are part of a larger denomination called the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It is a denomination that celebrates diversity, promotes life-long learning, and encourages freedom of thought. No one will tell you what you must believe. The one thing that binds us together is our confession that Jesus is the Christ and Word of the Living God. We celebrate this unity and the bonds of love at the Lord’s Table each Sunday.
Second, FCCO is an “Open and Affirming” congregation that welcomes and affirms the participation and ministry of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered, intersex, and questioning individuals and couples. While our congregation seeks to welcome ALL people we intentionally welcome these individuals who have been condemned, rejected, and oppressed by other religious institutions. This stance reflects the understanding that every human being is created in God’s image.
Finally, FCCO generally embraces a progressive theology. The life and witness of Jesus serves as a model for our Christian walk and specifically calls us to minister to the poor, oppressed, outcast, and excluded. Jesus leads us to be continually mindful of the dangers of power and privilege. Therefore outreach, work for social justice, and service are necessary as we seek together to be the body of Christ in the world.
Wherever you are on your spiritual journey your presence and input is important to our life together. We like to think FCCO is the perfect place for imperfect people. The amazing grace of God creates for us a space where we can take risks, ask tough questions, receive direction, and above all know we are loved.
