A Guide to the Wonderful World of FCCO Abbreviations
Ministries of the Local Church
FCCO First Christian Church of Orange – an open and affirming congregation. Founded in 1883 before the town of Orange even existed.
CA&O Christian Action and Outreach – the committee that decides which local charities to receive contributions, coordinates the collection of funds for special offerings, puts on projects for the needy, and collects “loose change” each Sunday for various local outreach organizations.
SNT Sunday Night Together – ministry serving homeless and hungry individuals each Sunday in Orange. FCCO’s SNT is the 4th Sunday of each month.
S&F Stewardship and Finance – the committee which reviews monthly income and spending, plans the annual budget and stewardship campaign, and coordinates and promotes giving and local funding.
W&W Worship & Wonder – children’s worship and education designed for children 4 years old through 3rd grade. This takes place during worship after the children’s message.
YD Young Disciples – kids’ group, designed for children 4 years old through 2nd grade, for fellowship, learning, spiritual growth, and service
JYF Junior Youth Fellowship – kids’ group, designed for children 3rd through 5th grade, for fellowship, learning, spiritual growth, and service.
Chi Rho A youth group, designed for middle school age youth (6th to 8th grade), for fellowship, learning, spiritual growth, and service. Chi (X) and Rho (P) are the first two letters in Christos (the Greek word for Christ).
CYF Christian Youth Fellowship – A youth group, designed for high school age youth (9th to 12th grade), for fellowship, learning, spiritual growth, and service.
DW Disciples Women – women’s group for fellowship, service, worship, outreach, and learning opportunities. (Formerly CWF – Christian Women’s Fellowship.)
DM Disciples Men – men’s group for fellowship, service, worship, outreach and learning opportunities.
Other Words to Know
Moderator A layperson who is chairperson of a voluntary board of elected and appointed individuals who are the governing body of the congregation.
Elders A voluntary ministry of affirmed individuals who perform assigned ministerial functions such as sharing in the ministration of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, the conduct of worship, and the pastoral care and spiritual leadership of the congregation. Once affirmed as an elder you are an elder for life, choosing either active or inactive status. Elders must be members of the congregation.
Diaconate A voluntary ministry of affirmed individuals who prepare and serve communion, collect the offering, and assist the elders with home communion. Membership is not required to serve as a member of the Diaconate.
Acolyte A voluntary ministry of individuals (usually children) who perform duties during worship such as lighting of the altar candles.
Stephen A confidential caregiving program to provide one-on-one comfort and support to Ministry church members going through any crisis transition.
Ministries of the Regional Church
PSWR Pacific Southwest Region – serving Southern California, southern Nevada, and Hawaii – one of 33 geographic areas (called regions) in the United States and Canada. Regional Ministries look after the congregations in their regions.
YLT Youth Leadership Team – a group of youth (9th to 12th grade) and adults who plan, design, and lead youth events for the region.
Loch Leven A camp and conference center in the San Bernardino National Forest (northeast of Yucaipa) which is owned and operated by the PSWR. It is used year-round for retreats, conferences, reunions, meetings, events, service projects, classes, and youth camp.
Ministries of the General Church
(Entire Denomination in the United States and Canada)
DOC Disciples of Christ – short for Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) – the oldest mainline Protestant Church founded on American soil.
GA General Assembly – church-wide five-day conference which meets biennially.
GYC General Youth Council – made up of students and adults who are committed to youth ministry in their local congregations and regions to give them opportunities to grow as future leaders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
DHM Disciples Home Missions – a general ministry of the Disciples concerned with various ministries in North America.
DOM Division of Overseas Ministries – a general ministry of the Disciples concerned with world missions abroad.
DMF Disciples Mission Fund – the unified budget and funding process for the entire denomination.
NBA National Benevolent Association – supports communities of compassion and care and advocates for the well-being of humanity.
WOC Week of Compassion – the disaster relief and humanitarian assistance program fund of the Disciples.
